FACT BRIEF

Is Nevada one of the most expensive states to own a car?

By Megan Loe on 03/14/2025

Yes.

Nevada is one of the most expensive states to own a car, according to multiple analyses of data from 2024 and 2025.

According to a Forbes analysis updated in January, which looked at gas prices, repair costs, average car insurance costs and auto loan payments, Nevada is tied with California as the most expensive state to own a car.

LendingTree also ranks Nevada as the most expensive state to own a car, mostly because of high average car insurance costs.

Similarly, GoBankingRates.com ranked Nevada second based on insurance premiums, gas prices, average repair costs and other data.

Nevada has high car insurance rates because most of its residents live in urban areas, where the chances of a crash are higher. A high rate of vehicle thefts, along with rising costs of car repairs and medical treatments, are also behind the elevated insurance rates, according to Harris Insurance.
